A number of roads in the borough are getting a face-lift.
"Because of our long-range planning — plus county, state and federal assistance — we will be doing more road work in the borough than has been seen in many years," Mayor Raymond Eppinger said.
The ongoing repairs incorporate the borough's 2008 and 2009 road programs.
"The 2008 and 2009 road programs will overlap, because by the time last year's budget was approved, it was too late in the year to start road projects," Eppinger said.
Roads on the list for repairs include Paul Avenue, North End Drive, Ridge Road and Miller, Main, Jackson, Reid, Clark, High, Grove and Pierson streets. Portions of Willett and Lexington avenues also will be resurfaced.
Last spring, South River commissioned a company to conduct a survey of the roads in the borough.
"We're working on the worst ones first and then working our way down the list," the mayor said.
One bright spot in the bad economy is that the cost of the capital projects is less than anticipated, which will allow for additional roads to be added to the list, Eppinger said.
"It's basically about one-third cheaper," he said. "I think that's because the contractors are looking for work, and the cost of materials has gone down."
The road work will continue through the fall, he said.
